Something for everyone
Here within the Parish of Putney, we like to think that we have something for everyone. The menu to the right is a list of the different groups at All Saints' Church. If you would like to add your group to this page, please contact Carolyn Biddick with the relevant details
Church-based activities
Sunday School

- When?
- Sunday School runs every Sunday except for: (i) the first Sunday of the month, which is a family service (ii) during August (iii) at special services e.g. Easter, Harvest etc.
- Where?
- Age 3 - Reception: (White Group) William Morris room, church Reception & Year 1: (Yellow Group) Main hall, All Saints School Year 2 & 3: (Green Group) Main hall, All Saints' School Year 4 & 5 & 6: (Red Group) Scout Hut
- When can my child start?
- From 3 yrs old. Children will then move to the Yellow Group in the September they start school.
- Settling in?
- When your child is ready, drop in to the Sunday School and complete a registration form. It is recommended to try to attend consecutive weeks to get your child comfortable with the sessions. You are welcome to join part/all of the first few sessions to make the settling-in process easier for your child. By the third session, if your child is still unhappy to be left, we recommend waiting a few months and trying again. (Space is also at a premium so we try to keep the number of adults kept to a minimum.) If a child is distressed during a session, the teachers will come and find the parents in the church. If your child is not yet ready for Sunday School there is also a crèche available. This runs in the adjacent room during the service.
- Sunday School Teachers
- There will always be a minimum of two trained volunteer teachers. Sometimes there will be an additional volunteer/helper. All are CRB checked. On very rare occasions children may be turned away if the numbers exceed a safe limit for the space and number of teachers.
- What should you expect?
- Each group will be involved in age appropriate activities, songs, prayers, stories, discussions, games and role play, based around a bible story or moral teaching. Your child will bring home their work.
- Time?
- Please drop your child off by 10.25. Please be punctual. Unfortunately we cannot accept latecomers as it is very disruptive to the whole group. All the groups of children will be brought back into the church to rejoin their families just before communion/blessing.
- Signing in
- For safety purposes, it is very important to make sure your child is ticked off on the register when they attend a session.

- Want to be a teacher?
- We are always looking for more volunteers to join our team of Sunday School Teachers. It really is a fun way to get more involved with the church, and to get to know other parents and the children of the congregation. The commitment required is very manageable – no more than three or four sessions per term. And of course, the more volunteers we get, the less the number of sessions per teacher.
- Do I need experience?
- No. You don't have to be a qualified teacher, and nor will you be expected to plan a session from scratch. You would attend a short training session and then be partnered with an experienced volunteer. The theme for each week's session is provided by the church along with a series of suggested activities, prayers and readings. You would then plan the session together with your partner(s) based around this material.
- Godly Play
- We have now begun Godly Play sessions for children. These take place within the normal Sunday School sessions; approximately twice a term. This is a well established method of telling stories from our Christian tradition, in a way that has been inspired by the Montessori method of education. Feedback from children and parents has been very positive. Crèche

- There is a crèche (for children up to the age of three) held in the Burne-Jones Room at All Saints', every Sunday, during the 10:30 Parish Eucharist and you are very welcome to join us at any time during the service. We rejoin the main congregation for communion.
- It is a friendly retreat for those whose children struggle to sit through an entire service and is also a great way to meet other members of the congregation, particularly if you are new to the area.
- The crèche is run by volunteers from the congregation, usually with young children themselves. All the volunteers are CRB checked prior to joining the rota of helpers and have to have been worshipping regularly at All Saints' for at least a year.
- We are always looking for new volunteers, so if you use the crèche and feel you could help out from time to time, please contact:

Servers

- We are fortunate to have a group of servers who assist the Vicar during the Sunday Parish Eucharist at 10.30 am. If there are any children who are in Y3 and above, and who would like to join in and serve, they would be very welcome. Junior Singers

- The All Saints' Junior Singers first sang at a service at All Saints' Church on Easter Day 1994. The choir is made up of children who attend many of the local schools, and are aged between 6 – 11 years old. They meet to rehearse every Thursday in term-time from 3.40 - 4.25 pm at All Saints' Church. As well as contributing to the services at All Saints' Church (usually the first Sunday of the month) they give concerts and busk for charity at Christmas-time. All Saints' Church Sunday Choir

- Normally on Sundays (except the first Sunday of the month) at the 10.30am Parish Eucharist, the church choir sings during communion. The choir is conducted by Peter Foggitt (Director of Music) and is made up of members of the congregation, supported by a group of semi-professional singers (Schola). If anyone is interested in joining the choir, they should see Peter after the service.

Bible Study Group

- This bible study group meets fortnightly on Fridays at 10am for about 1½ hours at different venues within Putney. Membership is limited to eight people in order for everyone to have a chance to join in a discussion. Anyone interested in joining should ring Amanda Cameron on 0208 789 7442. (Due to the fact that the group meets during the day, it is currently made up of all women, however that should not exclude any man who works from home!)
Volunteering Opportunities
Maintenance Committee

- This is a group of people from the congregation, co-ordinated by Mike Biddick, who meet every 2 months or so, to discuss maintenance issues at the church (ranging from small jobs like fitting draught excluders to doors, lagging pipes and clearing gutters, to organising new heaters, chairs and toy cupboard). They action necessary work, gain permission from the Diocese if necessary, carry out a variety of jobs themselves, and arrange trades to do others. They also organise 'Spring Cleans' of the church from time to time.

Brass Cleaning

- This small, friendly group meets once a month, usually a Thursday afternoon 2.30 – 3.30pm, in order to clean the church brass. If you would like to join us, please contact Carolyn Biddick.

Church Flowers

- Enthusiastic arrangers take turns to create beautiful displays on a weekly basis at the church (except during Advent and Lent). The group is always grateful for any spare greenery you may have in your garden. Refreshments after the Sunday Parish Eucharist

- Refreshments are provided following the 10.30am Parish Eucharist, by a team of volunteers on the coffee rota. Having a cup of tea/coffee after the service has finished gives people the opportunity to chat, get to know one-another and to find out more about the church if new to the area.

Stewarding at the Parish Eucharist

- With such a busy Parish Eucharist, the role of the stewards is a very important one. They greet people when they arrive at the church, assemble the books and paperwork necessary for the service, guide people to their seats, advise people on facilities such as Sunday School, crèche etc. They are all volunteers and the rota (which includes some 12noon baptisms) is organised on a monthly basis by Matthew Salisbury. Activities Committee

- The Activities Committee’s primary aim is to promote social activities that bring people together across the two churches, as well as supporting church based activities at St Mary’s and All Saints’.
- During the last year, the Committee has organised the two main regular Parish events, the Christmas Fair and the annual Burns Night Supper, as well as other events during the year including tying daffodils for Mothers’ Day, collecting and distributing gifts at the Toy Service and the St Mary’s Harvest Brunch, to name but a few.
- Getting involved in the Committee is a great way to meet other people in the parish and a way in which you can make a valuable contribution (none of these events happen without a lot of hard work and planning by members of the Committee).

Parish Magazine

- This quarterly 'Parish' magazine, covering both All Saints' and St Mary's, has been produced for over ten years and reflects the liberal and inclusive approach of the parish.
- In the summer of 2009 the magazine was rebranded 'Parish', benefiting from a drastic makeover, both in appearance and content. It is now produced in colour, has a dedicated cover page, and its pages and articles are interspersed with professional and attractive illustrations.
- Content-wise, every quarterly issue centres on a specific theme, usually linked to the Christian calendar. Advent inspired the November issue (“Waiting at important times in our lives”), while Lent was addressed in the February issue (“Identity, self- denial and temptation”). The features mean to engage, identifying real and contemporary issues. They aim to keep Christian beliefs accessible by interpreting their meaning for our daily lives.
- Parish related events, past and future, continue to be discussed in the section 'Parish and Community'. The section 'Something for Everyone' describes the many groups that meet regularly in the Parish.
- Silvia Macchia (Editor), Lee Barnes (Design) and Chris Townsend (Design) now manage the magazine and it is distributed through the two churches, and can also be downloaded from the new Parish Website.

Pastoral Care Team

- Pastoral Care at All Saints' - every Sunday, a member of the Pastoral Care Team is at the church before the start of the 10.30 am main Parish Eucharist, and two representatives are on duty at the end of the service. They may be identified by the green rosettes they wear.
- If you are new to our church or would like to know more about the church, please introduce yourself to them. If you know of anyone who lives in our parish and who would benefit from our support, for example hospital or home visits, shopping, small household jobs etc please let them know. - All Saints' Church is surrounded by its own garden, which are a great asset to us. The upkeep of the herbaceous borders is a task that members of the congregation have undertaken (the lawn/hedge is cut under contract); the beds are divided up, and tended individually by volunteers. This is co-ordinated by Nic and Liz Greenwood, who would welcome any offers of help with gardening, and/or donation of plants.
- There are often opportunities for new people to sign up and help look after individual plots.
- There are some Working Party dates in the diary, and anyone is most welcome to come along to these – the more the merrier, as there is always plenty to do! Please bring basic gardening equipment with you, as the church is unable to supply this.

Putney Senior Social Group

- The Putney Senior Social Group meets at All Saints' Church every Monday morning (except on Bank Holidays) from 10.00 am – 11.30 am. It is a friendly, welcoming group for the over 60's, providing an opportunity for company and lively conversation, as well as delicious homemade cakes, fresh coffee and tea. The group has also enjoyed a few trips out (eg Chessington Garden Centre and the Houses of Parliament), and a visit by our local MP, Justine Greening, who popped in for tea one day. - Volunteers are needed!
- Each Monday (except Bank Holidays) the Senior Social Group is run by two volunteers, who set up, and make the tea and coffee. If you could spare a couple of hours once every 4-6 weeks, and would like to join the group of helpers, the Senior Social Group needs you! The All Saints' 1885 Singers

- The 1885 Singers was founded in 1997 and has grown in both size and reputation, covering a range of repertoire. The choir gives four concerts a year, with usually a four-week rehearsal period. It is a community choir in every respect, with an open invitation to anyone who would like to join in.

- The church itself is available for concerts, pupil recitals and meetings. It provides an ideal space for concerts, having excellent acoustics and a good quality Yamaha grand piano (bought 3 years ago). The church seats 300 people.
- All Saints' Church is the Putney Centre for the ABRSM music exams.
- As the church does not currently have a community hall/suitable sized room, or kitchen facilities, it is not a suitable venue for dance classes and children's parties.
